Report by Emma Davies
The 3 England shore teams met up in Dover on Bank Holiday Monday before setting off by mini-bus for their destinations in Italy. Juniors being the first to arrive at the meeting place out side Bill's Bait & Tackle in Snargate Street. John Amery the junior team manager then set about packing the bus. Tackle and rods, suitcases and food went in and out of the bus several times.
I'm not sure whether he was trying to get all the gear in or just trying to make it look good but eventually after several attempts it was in and the doors were closed. However the first casualty became apparent. The tip of one of the rods was broken after being stood on. A lesson learned perhaps. When traveling it's always best to pack rod in a tub of some sort especially for long distances in confined spaces. Emma Davies and reserve Joyce Rogers two locals to Dover arrived on time for the 7pm. meet and waited patiently. After 45 minutes and no sign of their minibus, mobile phones came out. Emma contacted Rose Browning on the bus and the truth came out. They had Ian Golds on the bus. Anyone who knows Ian, knows that he is not a man to rush anywhere. At matches Ian turns up just minutes before the start, He never seems to panic and with his customary methodical approach always seems to be ready to start fishing on time. This time he was late again at their meeting point. His excuse, the car broke down?? He transferred his tackle to the bus and they set off. Too good to be true? Yes it was. Ian's passport had been left behind at home. It would probably have been better to pick Ian up in the first place. Anticipating a long wait Emma and Joyce retired to the Pub for a team briefing. At 8.30pm. Everyone arrived and tackle and suitcases were packed into the mini buses quite a feat in itself. The men's team was almost ready.
Where was Ian? He's was sorting out tackle on the side of the road. His bags and tackle strewn around him. I thought he was actually making traces. He was last again.
Finally all was loaded in the 3 busses and farewells were said to families and friends and the grueling 24-hour mini bus trip had started.
