This Page is designed to help anglers who want to make their own rigs, If you follow the
patterns on this page and then adjust them to suit your style of fishing, you won't be far wrong.
Remember not all anglers are experts, there are anglers who are new
to making rigs, so we have made this page as easy to follow as we think
possible.
Things you will need
Crimps these come in various sizes some are 8mm long and some 4mm long, we prefer
the 4mm crimps, but make sure they go over your rig main body line, and they are soft not hard to minimise line damage.
Beads Once again there are many sizes, we find the best size is 3mm but you can use bigger.
Swivels You will need many different sizes, For the bottom where the line attaches to
the lead you will need a swivel of a minimum 60lb breaking strain,
For the top the same, and for the snood swivel anything from 20lb upwards.
Hook Length material There are many different brands out there, some are good some are not, ask your local
Dealer what he recommends or try a few different ones yourself you are bound to find one you like.
As for breaking strains, you will need from 12lb up to 40lb this all depends on how you intend to fish and where.
Rig body line I prefer to use a good quality shockleader line like Sufix, but there are many other brands
you can use, they need to be a minimum of 50lb breaking strain.
There is a rule I use about breaking strains, that is, if your lead is 5oz, times that by 10 you get 50 this is the
minimum breaking strain I would use, so if I were casting 6oz that would be 60lb and so on.
Hooks Loads and loads of Hooks are available, cheap ones, expensive ones,
I always recommend Kamasan B940's they are sharp and strong and come in everysize you need.
Also needed will be bait clips and impact shields.
The basic way we make the rig, is to start off with a length of shock leader for the rig body,
onto one end we tie a swivel or lead clip, then we place a crimp then a bead then a swivel then a bead then a crimp
onto the line this is then moved into position after you have attached the hook length,
with the required length of snood, if you try to put the assembly in place first and then
attach the hook snood it becomes difficult to get the right length, Remember do not squeeze the crimp too hard
it should be lightly squeezed onto the line with just enough pressure to hold it in place. Right here we go the first one is the two hook flapper
You will need 1x lead clip, 1x large swivel 60lb or #4, 2x small swivels 20lb or #8, 4x crimps, 4x beads,
1x length of shockleader, and 2x hook snoods, and last but not least 2x hooks,
look carefully at the diagram below and copy, please make sure you do not crimp the swivels into position
until you have attached the hook snood.
Now you should have a rig where the first hook cannot
touch the second hook in any way and also cannot touch the swivels.
This rig can also be made with three hook snoods called the three hook flapper, and with the first swivel assembly closer to the lead, this
is then called a one down two up see diagram below.

If bait clips were added to the rig you would then have a three/two hook clipped rig,
this rig would give more aerodymamic properties and when a bait sheid is added would protect the bait
on impact see diagram below.
A bait clip can be made of plastic and many other types of material
a cheap way is to use rubber tubing and a small bent piece of grip wire metal. or use the breakaway clips they are always available.
